I daresay most of you have seen the email being circulated that purports to demonstrate some magical significance about this year.
In case you have not:
Now figure this out, take the last two digits of the year you were born, plus the age you will turn this year.
It will equal 111.
WORKS EVERY TIME !!!!!!!!!!!
First off, it does not work every time. For a child born after 1999 the result is 11 and for the few remaining folk born before 1900 the result is 211.
But let us stick to the majority born during the twentieth century. The last two digits of the year you were born are given by B – 1900 where B is the year you were born. The age you will turn this year is given by 2011 – B
So the arithmetic sequence you are asked to perform is
B – 1900 + 2011 – B
= -1900 + 2011
= 2011 – 1900 since addition is commutative
=111.
So every time you subtract 1900 from 2011 you get 111. About as significant as 2 + 2 being four every time you do it.
Magical? Hardly. Move along. Nothing to see here.
